Down syndrome (also known as DS) is a condition in which a baby is born with an extra chromosome, which causes delays in a child’s development both mentally and physically. Much like other developmental disabilities, the physical features and medical problems associated with Down syndrome vary.
Individuals with Down syndrome typically share physical features including a flat facial profile, an upward eye slant, a projecting tongue, and low muscle tone (Hypotonia). Developmental delays that are commonly found include delays in speech and self-care.
